Look around. What do you see?

In the words of the fictional character Ferris Bueller, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”

I’ve been thinking about those words since GKC-PRSA welcomed Eric Morgenstern back to the microphone in September. If you missed the reception, you missed a great evening of sharing and laughing with one of Kansas City’s most influential public relations practitioners. But as luck would have it, or as opportunity would have it, you can read Eric’s message on his blog, “25 Years at Winning and Learning.”

Eric MorgensternIf you haven’t met Eric, I recommend you run, don’t walk, to LinkedIn and connect with him. Eric shares excellent information about our profession and engages in meaningful discussions. He’s good at making a positive difference in the lives of his employees, clients and numerous communities.

Eric’s talk resonated with me. When I think about the past 25 years, with particular emphasis on the last two, I’ve experienced a lot of change, success and failure – scratch that – success and lessons.

One of my favorite points from Eric’s presentation is that less can sometimes be more. Today is the slowest our lives have ever been, which means life will keep moving faster than ever. When I think about change as Eric suggests, I should learn when facing opportunities instead of interruptions. The pandemic was an interruption. Everything stopped. Where do we go from here? We can’t go back, but we can learn from what worked or what didn’t work and make something new.

Remember when we looked forward to meeting our colleagues and friends for lunch or happy hour and how energized we were after meeting new people or learning new things? We can experience that energy again, but it’s likely to be presented differently.

Today’s meetings may be hybrid, where some of us are together in the same place sharing lunch, while others join virtually while they have lunch on their own. Chances are good that someone else wants the same thing. Look for what’s new on the PRSA agenda or join a planning committee and help others by creating the programs you need and want. Check out these upcoming events:
•    Nov. 3 – Student Summit 2022
•    Nov. 7 – Inez Kaiser Speaker Series
•    Dec. 1 – Media Roundtable

And remember how we clapped and celebrated each other’s success at the annual PRISM Gala? We’re bringing that back. The first in-person PRISM event since 2018 is happening on Oct. 26.

If you are a new PRSA member or an existing member and want to maximize your PRSA membership, attend one of the webinars on Nov. 8 or Dec. 13. If you let your membership expire and are thinking about renewal, check out The Great Return program and see how PRSA has changed. If you like what you see, you can rejoin without paying the $35 reinstatement fee.

There are many more opportunities available if you look and ask. Start with the new GKC-PRSA website or reach out to a board member or me. Please tell us what you want and need from PRSA and a professional development organization. We have a survey you can fill out or send us an email. We are smart people. We are strong people. But we are stronger and smarter together.
