Where will we go this year?

Happy New Year Public Relations Friends,

Now that 2023 is here, I join everyone in reflecting on last year and finalizing my personal and professional goals for the year.

I consider myself a work in progress. To hold myself accountable, I’m sharing my personal goal of completing something I started a couple of years ago – the Accreditation in Public Relations (APR)

Lifelong learning doesn’t start and end at a specific age. It was time for me to consider my options. APR makes the most sense to me because PRSA has been my professional development organization of choice from the beginning of my career.

Last year, I teamed up with a couple of GKC-PRSA members who are also pursuing their APR, and we started a study group. If you would like to join us, please get in touch with me or our GKC-PRSA APR Chair, Norita Taylor, APR, for details.

I look forward to working with the GKC-PRSA Board of Directors to develop a strategic plan for 2023 and beyond. I find that my goals are pretty similar to those of the national organization:

  • Advance the public relations profession by helping practitioners build strategic partnerships within their organizations.
  • Provide relevant professional development programming for members and the Greater Kansas City community, which can advance the mission of PRSA and the profession’s future.
  • Help make PRSA the champion of ethical practices and professional standards.
  • Build the pipeline for PRSA and the profession by growing the membership and offering leadership training and opportunities for members. We must invest in the next generation.
  • Provide mentorship and partnership opportunities for early and mid-career professionals. Continue to invest in a robust PRSSA program that creates a competitive advantage for future professional leaders.
  • Celebrate our successes, individually and collectively.

Together we can make GKC-PRSA the organization public relations professionals go for ethics, case studies, continuing education, mentorship, leadership development, and more.

I encourage you to read this interview with Michelle Egan, APR, Fellow PRSA, 2023 PRSA Chair, where she shares her vision and goals.

I also ask you to read 3 Predictions for Communicators in 2023 and What’s Trending for 2023. Those articles summarize much of what I gained from ICON.
